Alice "Dolly" Richey

Alice “Dolly” Steffan Richey was born March 5, 1936, the sixth of 11 children, to Mike and Rose Steffan on the family farm in Edgar, Mont. She was so small her daddy said, “You could hold her in one hand just like a baby doll.” From that time on she was called Dolly. Although small in stature, Dolly was strong, determined and hard-working. Even the devastating news of pancreatic cancer was faced head-on in true "Dolly" fashion. Cancer has seldom met a fiercer opponent, but it finally took its toll, and she died Monday, July 15, 2013. She was 77.

Alice attended grade school in Edgar and graduated from Belfry High School in 1954. One of her fondest memories was being a cheerleader for the state champion Belfry Bats basketball teams of 1952, ’53 and ’54. After graduation she moved to Billings, where she shared an apartment with her big sister Leona and worked for Continental Oil.

She also held jobs at Clarks Fork National Bank in Fromberg, Mont., and Yellowstone Furniture Factory in Bridger, Mont. More recently she spent many hours volunteering at the Powell Valley Hospital in Powell.

Alice married Billy Greenough on Nov. 11, 1961. Together they had three children: Deb, Stephanie and Wendy. She loved the ranching life and carried with her a love for rodeo, horses and the country throughout her life.

Alice and Bill Richey were married on June 3, 1988. They lived in  Lakewood, Colo., for several years and eventually moved to their current home in Powell. Bill and Alice shared many wonderful trips together, the most recent just shortly before her death to SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo.

They also enjoyed going to craft shows, where they sold the quarter boards and trivets that they both spent hours perfecting. Camping trips with just the two of them or with as many grandkids as they could round up were always a special time for her.

Grandma Dolly was always there to lend a helping hand with her grandkids. Seeing them or even talking about them always brought a smile to her face. She also loved the annual trips with her dear sisters. Many fond memories of their adventures were shared with her loved ones. Alice was a dedicated, devoted and loving wife,  mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and will be truly missed.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents Mike and Rose; brothers Donnie and Wally; sister Leona and granddaughter Jessey.

She is survived by her  husband Bill of Powell; son Deb of Billings; daughters Stephanie (Shawn) Roods of Billings and Wendy of Red Lodge, Mont.; brothers Jim (Minnie) of Grand Junction, Colo., Monte (Judy) of Bridger, Bruce (Pat) of Naturita, Colo., Mike (Audrey) of Parker, Colo.; sisters Gloria (Bob) Thiel of Bridger, Carol (Ken) Jenkins of Columbus, Penny (Jim) Breen of Baker City, Ore.; brother-in-law George Jovanovich of Billings; sister-in-law Janie Steffan; Bill's children Debbie Remley, Curt (Katie) Richey, and Pam (Dennis) Farrell, all of Colorado; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 19, at United Methodist Church in Laurel, Mont.

Following a reception at the church, inurnment will take place at the Rockvale Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be sent to Powell Valley Hospice, Chase Hawks Memorial Association, United Methodist Church in Powell, or the charity of one's choice.
