Alice Zlomke

Senior Rose Queen of the North Big Horn Senior Center in 2004, Alice Zlomke, better known as Grandma or mom has been taken home by her savior Lord Jesus Christ on February 24, 2009. He was standing at the foot of the bed when she said for the last time "I love you".

Born to Frank and Emma (Hejsek) Bartos on October 15, 1923 on the family farm in Garfield County, Nebraska. It was a lot of work growing up on the family farm with four other siblings. There were cows to be milked and fed, chicken and pigs to feed. The Bohemian family name used to be spelled Bartosh until one of her ancestors dropped the "h" which takes away the Bohemian sound to the name. Alice spoke Bohemian only with her grandmother. She would spend the next 15 years being a tomboy and following her dad everywhere. He was her night in shining armor. Lavern Zlomke whom she married on February 1,1944 would share that title and honor. They would spend 61 years sharing their life together.

Her family was her life. They raised four boys; Dennis, Darrell, Mike, and Leland, and one girl, Patricia (Patsy) while living in Bonneville, Manderson, Osage and Wendover and then Frannie where the three children at home chose to live.

Her interest of quilting and gardening helped her take care of her family. Through her beautiful quilts her love could be felt. The garden was "humongous" with luscious red strawberries and towering corn with everything in between. The garden provided many hours of canning and freezing that she shared with family and friends.

Alice worked in different restaurants where she earned the name "Cowboy". Most of her time was spent traveling to sporting and band events, and plays while the children were growing up. They didn't miss a moment with their children. Once the children were grown and scattered across the country with the 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren Lavern and Alice traveled the country to spend time with them. They also spent time bowling, and attending craft fairs with their creative woodworking projects.

Alice was a tremendous cook. No one left her home hungry. Effortlessly she could prepare a meal for royalty completed with desert. Her colaches will always be her signature recipe. Once again, Alice demonstrated her love and devotion to her family. As the years began to catch up with them there was less traveling and more time with friends in and around Frannie. With the passing of Lavern, Alice moved to Rapid City, SD to live with her daughter and be near her grandchildren and great grandchildren. While in Rapid City, Alice enjoyed daily activities from soccer to basketball to concerts at the schools and at home by Taylor.

Alice is survived by her children Dennis (Joy) of Powell, Patricia of Rapid City, SD, Darrell (Cec) of Cheyenne, Michael (Mary) of Owasso, Okla., and Leland (Sherrie) of Hagerstown, Md.; two sisters, Hattie Osentowski of Ord Nebraska and Bethanie Pollock of California.
