Carl F Wiesen

Carl F. Wiesen, 89, died after a lengthy illness on November 26,2009 at his home in Powell.

He was the second of five children born to Frank and Anna Wiesen of Rockland, Michigan.

He enlisted in the army in Dec., l941. He was assigned to 826 Engineering Aviation Battalion. He received an Honorable Discharge as a 1st Lt. in Feb., l946.

Carl earned his Bachelor's Degree, then a Master"s Degree in Food Technology at Michigan State, and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Texas at Austin.

He was hired as a temporary instructor at the University of WY in 1955 and continued teaching microbiology there until his retirement as a Professor Emeritus in 1985. He loved his work at the University.

He married Emily Kuglen in 1965. She died following several years of illness and surgeries due to cancer, leaving their sons Edward 15 and Joseph 13.

Carl was thankful that Sheila (Sleep) Freed was one of his students; she enabled him to meet and marry her saintly mother, Carol. He often thanked God for allowing him to live for 25 years of marriage to her.

He appreciated his friends and often wished he would have been more expressive of his thankfulness to many departed relatives and friends who touched his life.

He loved gardening, cutting firewood, the beauty of nature and camping with grandkids in the Big Horn Mountains. It was a joy to attend army reunions and renew friendships of more than 50 years.

He was a member of the American Legion and NRA; he thought freedom was too precious to be exchanged for a doubtful security.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a brother Dean Wiesen and two sisters Martha MacRae and Gen Vial. Survivors include his wife, Carol, and his children Edward (Megan) Wiesen of Salt Lake City; Joseph (Angie) Wiesen of Cheyenne; Sheila (Dan) Freed of Sioux Falls, SD, Randall (Kim) Sleep of Garden City, KS, and Jason (Ginger) Sleep of Powell, WY. He had 17 grandchildren.
