Obituary

Katherine Christina Hooper age 90, entered the presence of her savior on July 4th leaving behinda legacy of faith, family, and a community ever touched by her love.

She was born to Albion and Marie (Burck) Whitcomb on August 4, 1935 in Independence, Kansas. She was the second child of four born to that union, including; Vivian, Katherine, Thelma and brother Carl in that order.

As a child, she enjoyed following her dad as he planted his vegetable and fruit garden every spring, often helping plant or pick the harvest. She also received many lessons in cooking, canning or sewing and needle crafts from her mother.

She attended Fredonia High School in Kansas graduating in 1954. She was stubborn, determined, and loved learning new things. She would teach you anything she knew if you asked her. She received a full ride scholarship from the American Red Cross to attend the Fort Scott School of Nursing. During that first year Katherine met the love of her life, Daniel R. Oliver and the two were married on November 28, 1954. To this union of 23 years, three children were born. Daniel Stephen, Sandra Katherine, and an infant son Stanley Richard (who passed away after 2 days).

Katherine and Dan lived in Pittsburgh, Kansas where Dan attended Pittsburgh Teachers College. In 1958 the family moved to Yuma, Arizona due to Steve's asthma condition. Katherine attended Arizona Western College and worked as a court reporter in Yuma. The warm weather allowed for growing fruit trees and a variety of lush vegetables. By now she was an accomplished seamstress and created and designed clothing as well as doing alterations for others. She enjoyed square dancing and often sewed matching dress and shirt combinations for the dances. Many weekends she and Dan could be found joining other couples playing the card game of Bridge.

In 1967 the family moved to Powell, Wyoming and Katherine finished her degree in Business and Teaching at Northwest College. She was a substitute teacher for the Powell schools and taught a Human Potential night class for NWC in Powell, Cody, Lovell, and Worland which kept her busy as well. For a time she worked as a bookkeeper and an Administrative Assistant for an attorney at law.

She never lost her love for nursing and attended the first Emergency Medical Technology class offered in Powell. Her work with the ambulance crew in Powell and St. Vincent's hospital in Billings was new and rewarding. She enjoyed helping in many various capacities finding it difficult to leave the patients she had assisted.

After Katherine and Dan divorced she met and married Warren Nunnery, and they lived in Casper. For 18 years she worked for Acme Tool as the head the head of the Safety Department as a Regional Administrator. They enjoyed their church, gardening and antiquing for that special treasure! During this time she had the privilege of sewing her daughter's wedding gown. Warren passed away in Casper.

Edward Hooper found he enjoyed many of the same things Katherine did and the two were married in 2005. Eventually they moved back to Powell where Ed drove 'Big Rigs’ and Katherine started another garden. The two enjoyed camping, traveling and yard work. They took several cross country trips to visit Katherine's family in South Carolina. They were married 16 years before Ed's passing in 2013.

Katherine had a talent for designing and sewing a wide variety of beautiful quilts and lap robes. This led to teaching a denim quilt class for the Community Education Classes at NWC for 10 years. As a TOP's member for 30 years, she encouraged many people to loose weight and become healthier. She looked forward to walking her little dog each day, making crafts, many happy hours in her garden, and attending a weekly bible study class at her church. She was a heartfelt, dedicated volunteer at Loaves and Fishes, the local food pantry. Her volunteer work continued at the Episcopal Thrift Shop where she enjoyed helping out many folks. Once she turned 90 her family would often ask, “What are you doing today?" and she would reply, "Oh, I have to work today, you can come another time.”

Katherine put her trust in Jesus Christ as savior when she was 14 years old and has been a devoted Christian ever sense. She taught Sunday School for many years and was the Sunday School Superintendent for 6 years. She loved her church family and especially the pot-luck dinners, and Sunday night hymnal singing. Katherine had a special love for her fellow man and wanted everyone to know the love of Jesus.

Katherine is survived by her brother Dr. Carl (LaJean) Whitcomb in Stillwater, Oklahoma, daughter SanDee (Marv) Wake of Worland, and grandchildren Brooke (Anthony)Guadagna, Chelsea (Jerel) Moore, Nick (Sheryl Flesher) Oliver, and seven great grandchildren. Katherine was proceeded in death by her parents, sisters; Thelma Whitcomb, Vivian Kinsey, her sons Stanely Oliver, Stephen Oliver, grandchild Jared Oliver, and husbands; Daniel, Warren and Edward.

Her service will be held at Charity Baptist church at 176 North Day St. Powell on Thursday, July 16 at 10am with Pastor Kevin Schmidt officiating. Katherine will be missed, but we rejoice that she can now live in the fullness that is her reward of eternal life.
