Ray Coombs — The Man, The Myth, The Legend.
Ray passed away on April 7, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. It was incredible to witness the endless parade of family and friends who visited, called, and reached out during his final weeks of life. He was deeply touched.
Ray was born on April 22, 1955, in Billings, Montana, to Bill and Margaret Coombs. He spent his early years enjoying farm life in Shepherd, where he developed a lifelong passion for mechanics. Anyone who knew Ray knew he was the go-to person for anything that needed to be fixed, rewired, rebuilt, or built from scratch. Despite his lack of college education, he was highly intelligent and capable. Engineers would marvel at his ingenuity–redesigning anything and everything to solve problems and ensure efficiency. He was truly a jack of all trades.
Ray met the love of his life, Karen Mullen Coombs, and they were married on February 1, 1977. Together, they built a life and homesteaded near Heart Mountain, where they raised their three children: Zack, Joe, and Becky. Over the years, Ray and Karen owned several businesses, and Ray later spent his working years in the trucking industry.
For Ray, trucking was never just a job—it was an adventure. He loved life on the open road, taking in the sights and embracing every journey. His passions included all things automotive, from drag racing International Scouts to snowmobiling and riding Razors and four-wheelers. The mountains always called to him, and he answered as an adventurer at heart—a spirit he passed on to his family.
Ray is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Zack (Brenda) Coombs, Joe (Rachel) Coombs, and Becky Coombs; and his grandchildren, Grace, Mason, Kane, and Hannah Coombs, Maddi (Cache) Cozzens, and Reece (Hailey) Hackenberg. He is also survived by his siblings, Jan (Terry) Byrd, Patty (Scott) Branstetter, Bob Coombs, and Patti (Levi) Talkington, as well as countless extended family members and friends who loved, respected, and relied on him.
He will be deeply missed.
